For today I have had a post that was sort of half done sitting in my drafts, so this hop is perfect for bringing it out and finishing it up.

I have posted about grooming before , with this photo of Mika giving a good pose beside some of her grooming tools.

Today I just wanted to go over a couple grooming tips and tricks, and my fav tools of the bunch!

The first thing I will talk about is nail clipping.
Something I am absolutely HORRIBLE at!
I say that because, I am SO scared of cutting the nails to close to the quick.
If your wondering what the 'quick' is, its the part of the nail that is pink which is where the live blood vessels of the nail are.
You will see in the diagram below , that with a dog like Lexus or Koda, who have clear nails, it is rather easy to clip because you can plainly see the quick.

BUT, in dogs like Mika, her nails are black and you cannot see where to trim.
You can look underneath the nail which helps, but needless to say, Mika gets her nails done at the groomers while I do the other dogs myself.

In the photo below, you will see two different types of nail clippers.
My old pair (the black handled ones) I always had trouble with. They slide upwards to clip, whereas the yellow handled ones close sideways on the nail.
I just purchased the yellow ones a couple weeks ago and they work MUCH better!
So my advice is to go out and pick yourself up a pair of those if your using anything but!

When I had Mika at the groomer last week, I took a couple photos to show you all. As you can plainly see on her face, she is not a happy camper! Ha!
And one thing you cannot see in the photos is she whines and cries the whole time we are there!
I feel so bad for her, but I know She is just being a sucky bum and absolutely hates being there!

A little P.S for woos.
The groomer I go to is called "Doggie Styles" haha! Love it!

In  case you are wondering, no that is NOT her fur on the ground!!

Lexi getting a nail trim with my new clippers! (Below)

Next I want to share my fav grooming tool with you.

Yup, this bad boy!

It works wonders for husky fur!!
As you will see in the video below, all you do is side to side motions and the fur comes off 'just like butta' hehe

Not the best video but you can see the fur that comes off of Koda, just in that short time and a few swipes.

Grooming your pet is super important!
I groom my dogs no less then once a week, but the norm is usually twice a week.
Until its time for husky blowout! Then its an every day task!
This being the time when twice a year or so, a husky will shed their entire undercoat, leaving your grass looking somewhat like this (below)
After a grooming session!

My arsenal of grooming tools!

What is your fav grooming tool?

  1. I hate clipping nails too. Bentley usually gets his cut at my vet's office for the same reason. When I do attempt it, I always slide the "stop" tab so I know I won't cut too deeply. I LOVE my rake. I've had it since my German Shepherds. They are great for the double coated dogs. My favorite nowadays is the Furminator!

    1. Oh I agree! No grooming kit is complete without the furminator! Works wonders!
That's definitely my second fav!! Thanks!

  2. I can relate about the nails too!! The girls go to the groomer to get them done. Both of them hate anybody touching their feet!! My Big Guy was a Newf/Lab mix and he used to shed like you cannot even imagine!! What a difference...I miss those piles of hair though...my Big Guy was so, so special to me!! Looks like you have the grooming thing down good!! I do touch ups in between professional grooms, but honestly, I just cannot get the "shaping" thing down and they both look like ragamuffins when I am done with them!! Best left to the professionals ...

    1. Haha! I don't blame ya! Newf/lab mix must have been beautiful!!
Luckily there is no shapingmand whatnot to grooming a husky. Our main concern is getting the tuffs out of their fur when they blow and keeping their fur soft shiney and smooth.
(Not to sure about show huskie tho)

  3. We find nail cutting hard. Earl has black nails making it impossible to see the quick. Its a battle for us to get Earl's done as he really dislikes it. He's getting there though! And doing it ourselves is at least free. I can't remember the brand of our current grooming brush, however I used to have an ANCOL double sided one. I still have it somewhere!

    Earl and I.

    1. It is hard, i agree. Mika hates hers being done, so it helps at the groomer because they have the set up to hook them all up properly. But she still whines and cries the whole time we are there lol!

  4. I have one paw with bright nails. The rest are black, so it's hard clipping those nails both my mom and I think.

  10. Delilah has beetle black nails, but they are super easy to clip. Sampson has light nails but the vet says his quick is deceiving. When I clip him I just take the curve of the nail because I have bled him before. I'd much rather pay someone to do it! And yes, I have the same clippers as you, that close from the side.

    1. Yea it's much better leaving it to the professionals!! I agree!! I greatly prefer the ones that close from the side! Makes it a much easier job!

  12. My nails are black so Ma takes me elsewhere for them to be clipped (since she clipped the quick once and probably cried more than I did). Husky coat appears to be a lot like my double-coat. When the undercoat is blown, Ma says she can strip an entire other Cairn terrier out of me! Great post!

I think we all hate having our nails trimmed!! Wonder why....?

  14. Nailah hates being groomed, we call her a hippie dog! XD My favorite tool has to be the pedi paw. I don't rely on it solely to trim her nails (that'd take forever) but what I do is first cut her nails with clippers then smooth them out with the pedi paw! :)

  15. Well, no nail clipping here, Mom has tried twice and it just scares the poop outta her, so it's the groomer only, we just get brushing once or twice a week till we look like little black bears!

  16. I just use a regular cat brush for Mikko. I don't brush him often because he doesn't have a thick coat. Have a great TT.

  17. Great post! Cooper gets his nails clipped at the vet. His are black too. As for brushing, he doesn't need much, except when he's shedding. Then a brush and my fingers do the trick. Jack cat is worse because with his long hair it mats up in the summer despite his constant grooming.

    1. Lucky! If there's one thing about huskies, its grooming! BOL!! It takes a ton of it!! Haha!!!
I usually have mine done when they visit the vet as well, when they go in for their annual shots and whatnot.
      Thanks for coming!
