OMD! Mondays - I am a dog

Hiya everyone!

Welcome to our
 "Oh My Dog" Mondays.
We hope you all had a PAWsome weekend.

Today for OMD, I am going to share some news I read straight out of www.examiner.com.
It's great news, thankfully, although it really makes us want to put our own Countries/cities under the X-Ray . . . providing your not already from France. Paws up for the most recent in dog news comin' from our french furiends.

A to Z challengeBefore we get started, today is letter "X" is the #atozchallenge.
"X" is for X-Ray.
What? That's all I could think of!

There have been a lot of cases involving dogs, where people have been let off far to easy for super horrid crimes! One in particular was out of Oregon. Three judges overturned an animal abuse case where an emaciated dog was found . . .  starved, mistreated, you name it.
For the full story on that, click HERE. . . .

France has decided to acknowledge that pets are more then just property. People get away with a lot of animal cruelty charges due to the fact that our beloved pets are seen as no more then a piece of furniture. An object, in the eyes of the law.

My husky is not furniture!

Above all, we pet parents know for damn sure (excuse my language) that our fur babies are NOT an object! Thank you France for being one of few who have realized that along with us!

The move to change this law in France came about after a very strong push from animal welfare groups - nearly 700,000 people signed a petition asking for this LONG standing law to be overturned.

Meanwhile back in the United states (in most ares) our pets still fall into the same category as couches and lamps! I tried my best to see what the laws are for these things here in Canada, but I could find nothing.

Again I say, I think it's far past time to put these other Countries/cities/states under the X-ray machine, and take a look at some old laws that NEED changed!

I would like to share another story found on www.examiner.com.
I thought this went PAWfectly with today's post. The words in this will make you feel sad . . . but it is spoken like a true dog.

"I am a dog.
I am a living breathing animal. I feel pain, joy, love, fear and pleasure.

I am not a thing.
If I am hit - I will bruise, i will bleed, I will break. I will feel pain. I am not a thing.

I am a dog.
I enjoy playtime, walk time, but more than anything, I enjoy time with my pack - my family - my people. I want nothing more than to be by the side of my human.
I want to sleep where you sleep, and walk where you walk.
I am a dog,
 and I feel love . . . I crave companionship.
I enjoy the touch of a kind hand and the softness of a good bed.
I want to be inside of the home with my family. Not stuck on the end of a chain or alone in a kennel or fenced yard for hours on end. I was born to be a companion, not to live a life of solitude.

I get too cold and I get too hot. I experience hunger and thirst. I am a living creature, not a thing.

When you leave I want to go with you. If I stay behind, I will eagerly await your return.
I long for the sound of your voice. I will do most anything to please you. I live to be your treasured companion.

I am a dog.
My actions are not dictated by money, greed, or hatred. I do not know prejudice. I live in the moment and I am ruled by love and loyalty.

Do not mistake me for a mindless object. I can feel and I can think. I can experience more then physical pain. I can feel fear and joy.  I can feel love and confusion. I have emotions. I understand perhaps more then you do.  I am able to comprehend the words you speak to me, but you are not able to always understand me.

I am a dog.
I am not able to care for myself without your help. If you choose to tie me up and refuse to feed me, I will starve. If you abandon me on a rural road, I will experience fear and loneliness.  I will search for you, and wonder why i have been left behind. I am not a piece of property to be dumped and forgotten.

If you choose to leave me at a shelter, I will be frightened and bewildered.
I will watch for your return with every footfall that approaches my kennel run.

I am a dog.
A living breathing creature.
If you choose to take me home, please provide me with the things that I need to keep me healthy and happy.

Provide me with good food, clean water, warm shelter, and your love.
Do not abandon me. Do not kick me. Do not dump me when your life gets to busy. Make a commitment to me for the entirety of my life, or do not take me home in the first place.

If you desert me, I do not have the means to care for myself.
I am at the mercy of the kindness of the people.
If I fall into the wrong hands, my life will be ruined.

I will experience pain, fear and loneliness.
If I wind up in an animal shelter, I have only my eyes to implore someone to save me, and my tail to show you that I am a friend. If that is not good enough, I will die.

I am a dog.
I want to give and receive love.
I want to live.
I am not a thing.
I am not a piece of property.
Please do not discard me.
Please treat me with kindness, love and respect.
I promise to repay you with unconditional love for as long as I live."

My husky is not an object!Even though this was about a dogs perspective, this goes for all of our pets.
Dogs, cats, Rabbits etc . . .

Our pets are not objects. We all know that, now it's time for the rest of the world to realize it.

Thanks for coming by and for reading this meaningful post.

See you tomorrow.

  1. I swear I just read a title somewhere that said something like dogs are no longer property in one of the states... I wish I could remember what it was about now... Very nice post though with a great message. Also reminds me that I should get on Examiner. I'm the Austin Pet Health Examiner... or used to be as it's been ages since I've written anything.

    1. Oh wow, you write for Austin Pet Examiner? That's great!
All of our states and Countries need to be getting on top of this. The law stating that animals are merely property is just so wrong on so many levels.

  2. Well said and we so agree. Animals are not objects and these people who do horrid things to animals need to be punished so the right message goes out.
    Have a marvellous Monday.
    Best wishes Molly

    1. Precisely! The law seems to be all about making an example out of a young person who commits a crime, but what about making examples out of animal abusers?
      Have a great day Molly!

  4. Yep, I believe in Canada that pets (and other animals) are property, and not afforded any 'living, feeling being' status like France has done. Then again, our animal laws have remained largely unchanged in the last 150 years... so.... suffice it to say: room for improvement!
I know there's a petition somewhere to change this in Canada, but couldn't find it just now doing a quick search (found one for Quebec, but not country-wide).

  9. That was sad but at the same time beautiful, and so true. I can't imagine that anyone thinks of pets in any other way than family.
