OMD! Mondays

Hiya everyone!
Every Monday I usually open with saying how much I hope everyone enjoyed their weekends.
It just seems like the weekend goes by FAR to fast!
I know you all feel the same way!
Regardless though, I do hope you all had a good one!

I bring you a very serious topic today for OMD Monday.
I have touched on this before, you can see that post HERE.

In my very own Country, we have been battling a HUGE issue.
Seals. Not even just seals, but baby seals. Baby seals who are not even three months old yet!

There are those who have been working very hard here in Canada and across the world , to stop the killing of these beautiful baby seals.I have done a small part in sharing as much as possible, signing petitions, and sending messages to our government. I will be the first to say it feels pretty darn good when you get an email saying thanks for all I have done.....although, I am not naive, and I realize my part is only a small one. Don't kid yourself though, petitions do more then you might think! Between that and sharing about a cause, for some of us, it is simply all we can do.

I know sometimes I drift away from blogging about dogs or cats on my OMD posts, it's just that when topics like this arise, I feel the need to bring attention to them. I do apologize for the dog and cat free post.

I would like to now share an infographic with you. Credit to the International Humane Society.

Fashion . . . this is the reason our baby seals are being murdered.
?????????????????
How horrible is that?

There is an upside this year however. Seal slaughter has drastically gone down in numbers.

Why?
Because we care!
Because you care!
Because people are not sitting quiet while this is happening!

I have a video to share with you as well. It is titled "The ones who got away"
Watch as baby seals play free, and swim in the water while the boats drive right past.

The theory as to why they are driving past these seals is because of the animal advocates and the International Humane society who are taking videos of them. These videos have gone viral and are bringing it down on the slaughter. This is literally slowing down the slaughter.

Take a moment to look at the video. There is nothing in this video showing harm to any seals.

I bet right about now you are wondering how you can help?
Great!
The answer to that is in these websites. Feel free to check them out and learn more about some easy simple ways you can help end seal slaughter.
If you live in the U.S go to this site : protectseals.org
Outside of the U.S go here : hsi.org/protectseals

Thanks to all of you for taking the time to read this post.
I promise tomorrow we will be getting back to da dawgs!

Enjoy the rest of your Monday!

  1. This is why mom loves her fake fur coat. She would never ever wear a real fur coat.

  4. Great post! The seal hunt is - or should be - a huge embarrassment for all of us Canadians! (And those in Iceland, Norway, Finland, in Russia... countries that also permit seal hunting.)

    1. That's for sure! It is an embarrassment to me! I hate even posting about something like this out of my own country, but it needs to be out there. Thanks for coming by.

  5. What happens to baby seals is God-awful! What kind of fashion statement is someone making by wearing a baby seal?!? Give me a break! I will definitely check those sites...I want to protect the seals! They are just too cute to be harmed!

  7. My Peep #1 has a faux fur jacket. She hardly ever wears it which is odd 'cause it's really nice. Ethical, too. When it comes to fur... FAUX is the only way to go. If you're a peep, that is.

    Purrs,
    Nissy

PS. Peep #1 has a couple of fake pony tail type thingies too. Oops! Maybe I wasn't supposed to tell the world 'bout that. Oh well.... the deed is done now. Peep'll never know. purrs

  8. Great infogram and beautiful video! I'm glad progress is being made fighting this senseless killing. I grew up in New York, fashion capital of the U.S., where women went food shopping in their fur coats. Educating people and changing their minds about wearing crap being sold at the expense of these beautiful creatures will make a difference. If no one's buying the crap there won't be any point in trying to sell it.

Very true. Awareness is the key! If nobody buys there would be no point!!

  10. Mom thinks the seal hunt is awful and she does not even own one single fur coat. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. The only creature that needs seal fur is the seal itself.

  14. First I want to thank you for not showing horrific pictures of seals being harmed and killed. Those of us who follow you are animal lovers. This is an argument I have on FB showing atrocities that we as animal lovers do not support and work against each of us in our own ways. Second thank you for bringing to the fore front the issue of seal abuse. I am glad it is on the way DOWN! That is excellent. Finally thanks for simply caring. It's people like you (and everyone else who works at helping) you truly made it so this is a downward trend. *sorry for the rant*

    1. Wow! Thank you for your comment!
Sometimes graphic images need to be seen for people to really pay attention, however this blog is not about that, as you said my followers are animals lovers and do not follow me for those reasons. I like to keep my blog happy and upbeat but when things like this arise, I feel the need to spread awareness and do what I can to help. And I know how much it hurts me to see horrible photos of animal abuse.
I truly appreciate your comment, and it is nice to be recognized for trying my best to do something right. Thanks you so much!

  16. The reason we don’t think petitions work is cos we’ve been petitioning Canada for over 30 years to stop the slaughter of baby seals and it continues to fall on deaf ears. I wish they’d get the message.

    1. I completely understand how you feel. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion of course. Petitions alone are not enough, but I feel they do help. And numbers have decreased significantly this year because of the presence of the people who are video taping this horrid slaughter. I will do what I can until it ends, however small my part may be.

  20. I had an email about this recently too, though I forget exactly who it came from. The seals are so cute and it's just so sad. I hate some of the things that go on in this world! I believe that the small things we do really do help....they add up, and I think that shows by the fact that the numbers are going down....though no one will rest until the number is 0!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Exactly! And that number 0 can't come fast enough, that's for sure!!!
But at least we know we are making a difference, and that's what counts!
