Welcome to our new Saturday post - Pack talk with the Sibes.
As always we will be joining Ruckus the Eskie for his Sepia Saturday hop.
You can link up to share your sepia photos as well! Just use the linky codes below this post.
We are changing up the name of our Saturday Sibe Vibe.
We discovered that our good furiends Five Sibes Mom also has a Sibe Vibe on her blog as well.
And here I thought I was so clever coming up with The Sibe Vibe! haha!
So, I have decided to change it up a little.
You also may have noticed the new look of my blog?
Please feel free to let me know what you think of the new look!
Husky Fun Fact of the week :
Siberian huskies were once used to herd reindeer.
Yep, you heard that right!
Way back when, the Chukchi tribes used to rely on reindeer for food.
If your not sure who the Chukchi people are, check out my post on the history of the Siberian Husky.
When the climate started to change, the reindeer moved along to find a warmer climate.
The Chukchi people were dependent on reindeer for food, so they had no choice but to follow.
There is a cool part of history that leads into that part of the story, but I will leave that for our next Pack talk post.
The Chukchi eventually learned to domesticate the reindeer, therefore, rather then hunting the deer, the huskies job turned to herding.
And they were good at it!

The reason the Chukchi tribe decided to domesticate the reindeer, was their strength.
Reindeer can pull a much larger load then the huskies could, and the purpose of the Siberian Husky back then was to pull lighter loads for long distances, using their speed. With the larger loads, there was no speed.
So the huskies and the reindeer worked together.
Here is a gorgeous version of the Chukchi people with their huskies in sepia.

The Siberian Husky had many jobs. They were a working breed, and loved every minute of it.
They were bred for hunting, pulling sleds, herding, and a guardian for their children.
See my post about husky babysitters HERE.
That wraps up our husky fun fact of the week.

I am trying to come up with a new name for my Saturday husky posts.
I am hoping you, my readers, can help me out?
I have a few thoughts, so you can either pick your fav one out of my list, or I am open to any suggestions you may have.
My picks :
- Pack talk
- Husky talk
- All things husky
- Sibe news
- Pack talk with the Sibes
Remember, this is just the title for my Saturday posts, not my blog title.

ReplyDeleteOK great! Thanks for your opinion Jeanne!
DeleteHappy Sepia Saturday!
Hey guys, what a great informative post! The husky pics are beautiful too. I remember when I visited Alaska and was confused that their huskies didn't look like that, haha. Hmm as for ideas for a title for your Saturday posts, I love the ones you've already come up with, and all I could think of were Small Talk with the Sibes, Husky Pack Patter, or Pack Chat :)
ReplyDeleteThank you!! I'm so glad you enjoyed our post!
DeleteHuskies can come in all shapes and sized. Then there are Alaskan huskies which a lot of people don't realize, are not pure bred huskies. An Alaskan husky is a mix of Siberian, and other breeds to make them even faster!
I love Small talk with the Sibes! That is a great one! Thank you for the suggestion!
I love the title of "All Things Husky" for your Saturday posts...that way you can blog about anything and everything (which you can anyway but oh well!) Also, by putting the name "Husky" in the title you will turn up in searches when people search for Huskies :)
ReplyDeletexoxo
Makes sense! Thanks for your input Caren!!!
DeleteVery interesting....I love history, especially about dogs.
ReplyDeleteI kind of like Joanna's suggestion of Pack Chat, but I might make it into Husky Pack Chat, or Pack Chat with the Sibes.
Jan, Wag 'n Woof Pets
I love history too. I am always eager to learn history about pets. All great suggestions!!
DeleteI like pack chat with the Sibes...*sigh* so many decisions!!

We were thinking about Chat with the Pack. PackTalk? The only thing being football fans that kinda reminds us of the Green Bay Packers football team. HuskieChat? Anyway great post today and very interesting to see the historical photos and hear about the Huskies in Alaska.
ReplyDeleteBOL I never even thought of that (Green Bay) Oops!!! That might throw some people off huh? Thanks for all of your suggestions!!

You know those huge blow up decorations you see at Christmas time? They have one where huskies are pulling Santa's sleigh! I WANT it!!! hahaha!
Great info. I didn't know about the herding capabilities of the Husky. As for the name of the Saturday Post, I like All things Husky. Have a great Saturday.
ReplyDeleteI know, and I love sharing interesting info about Sibes. Most people have no clue about half of what huskies jobs were way back when. I enjoy doing the research as well.
