Oh My dog! Blacklisted dog breeds

Hiya everyone!
Welcome to OMD Mondays.
I hope you all had a PAW-tastic weekend!
The Sibe Tribe had a pretty relaxing weekend. On Sunday, when the weather was nice, we spent most of the day outside. How about you? What did you and your pack do this weekend?

More fun in the sun photo's to come this week!

On to today's "OMD" story.

A blogging furiend of mine, (Caren from the blogs Cat chat with Caren and Cody, and Dakota's Den) shared this with me, so that I could bring some attention to it. If you don't know her blog, you don't know what your missing!

Did you know that if you own a certain breed of dog, you may have a hard time getting home owners insurance?
I know right!
Talk about breed discrimination in a nutshell!

This deserves a BUTT - HEAD post all in itself!

Why are some breeds blacklisted by insurers?

They choose certain breeds which they believe are more aggressive then others, or who they believe will cause damage, or have the ability to bite more then other breeds.

Is this logical?

Heck no!
Maybe to them, who knows, but to me, this is breed discrimination at it's best.

Here are the top 10 breeds, most likely to be blacklisted by insurers :

  • #1 - PitBull - Staffordshire Terriers

  • #2 - Doberman Pinschers

  • #3 - Rottweilers

  • #4 - Chow Chows

  • #5 - Great Dane

  • #6 - Perro de presa canario

  • #7 - Akita

  • #8 - Alaskan Malamute

  • #9 - German Shepherd
  • #10 - Siberian Husky

There you have it. The top 10 breeds black listed by Insurance companies.

Yep, you saw right!
Number 10 is Siberian Husky, which is of course one of the main reasons I am doing this post! So basically people, if you are owned by one of these breeds, be warned that when you apply for home owners insurance, you may have a hard time.

So, do you think my huskies would pass for Golden Retrievers, so I can avoid the insurers?

Yea, probably not!

Was your dog breed in this list?

Thanks for spending part of your Monday with us!
See you tomorrow :)

  1. For some strange reason, Bentley is not on the list! BOL!! We did have German Shepherds though and because one was a retired police K-9, we were warned that it would be difficult to get homeowners insurance if we lived in the city. Fortunately, we were out in the country at the time. It is definitely breed discrimination. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Nope, no Bassets! BOL!
It defi itely is discrimination! I hated reading about it and don't understand why humans keep blaming whole entire breeds!

  2. I know it sounds unfair, but they go by the numbers, and these breeds are more likely to- and have- caused harm, which in turn cost them money. It's not discrimination. Some companies will ask other questions, such as the dog's age and if spayed/neutered. It does make a difference.

    1. All good points Rumpy. Thanks for sharing, however I still find it unfair to us dog owners who have well behaved dogs, but happen to be one of these breeds. Some people ruin things for everyone

  3. Not right at all. Little yappy dogs can be far more aggressive we find. Have a marvellous Monday.

  4. My friends had 2 pit bulls and about 10 years ago when an insurer came to their house to talk with them about homeowner's insurance and saw their dogs, they told them "you'll have to get rid of your dogs". My friends said uh no, I don't think so!

  5. No Bichon Frises! I have actually been bitten by a poodle! We always had German shepherds growing up and never had a problem, but times have changed...

  6. Why are they blacklisted? Can't be just their 'dangerous' personalities, because most of these dogs are actually known to be tender. And isn't personality mainly linked to the way people treat and educate their dogs?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes, it is. And no, it's not just based on dangerous personalities, it is level of destruction etc... but even still, nothing like taking it out on the whole breed!

  7. So glad you had a FUN weekend. We had HUGE thunderstorms so we didn't get much time outside. We know about the blacklist of breeds for insurers. Those breeds also appear on a blacklist for some homeowners associations. We disagree with it completely.

  8. Oh, Jenna, you got my blood BOILING on this Monday morning!!! I cannot stand breed discrimination of any kind, it's appalling and unethical at best. it's the owners that make dogs "bad" not the dog themselves! Any dog can become a monster if an owner makes him that way, even a Chihuahua can be vicious if you make him that way. I cannot believe Huskies are on that list! My Husky Isis is a registered Pet Partners therapy dog! In fact we're going to her children's reading program TODAY, in like 2 hours! Ridiculous insurance companies, SHAME on them!

  12. So sad that breeds are blacklisted. Yes one of mine is on there, German Shepherd. What is sad is he is by far the nicest, gentlest dog I have every owned. Sigh!

  13. Discrimination is discrimination. Plain and simple as that. It's also, WRONG. Any and all kind of discrimination is wrong.

What's more... Some of those dogs may be workin'-from-home guard dogs. Can't imagine a thief wantin' to break into the house where a German Shepherd lives, you know? That should be savin' the insurance companies money.

Bottom line is, wrong AND stupid. And that's MY opinion on the matter.

  14. I think it's SO wrong. Our insurance company has never asked us if we even had dogs, never mind asking breeds. I'd keep shopping around until I found one that didn't do this for sure, if I had to. I hope you never run into this discrimination personally.
Ha ha, love the "golden husky" photo!!

  15. When Mom and Dad moved here from the East Coast, they had trouble getting homeowner's insurance for that very reason. Luckily we found one who was willing to listen to all the good things our vets and obedience trainers had to say about the dogs Mom and Dad had then and agreed to insure them. Whew!!! That was a good thing for our sakes. Mom tells everyone that the biggest harm we would do would be kissing peeps to death:)

  17. All the breed specific regulations make me so angry. We wanted to adopt a husky/lab mix from our local shelter and our landlord said, "You know huskies are aggressive, right?". Umm, what? Needless to say, he came home with us and was the sweetest dog ever :)

  18. OMC!!!!! Those dog breeds can cause damage, but so can every other dog breed in the world!!!!!!
That is absolutely ridiculous. Reading this post made my blood boil! Those insurers are buttheads, you are right there!!

    1. Hmmmm....maybe insurance has different standards for different areas? Not to sure.
And your right, I don't know why we should even have to tell them anything like that!

    1. Right?!! Or any of them for that matter! Some may disagree, but I feel tat this fits right in with breed discrimination!

  21. OMD...Right now, if they could hear our Mama growling, they would not insure her!! Mama thinks this is a bunch of [insert HBO words here] and always gets angry when she reads about things like this. After volunteering at shelters filled with more than one of the above breeds, she can attest that sometimes Arty is more moody than the biggest Pittie in the shelter....
Sometimes humans can be big ole buttheads!!!!

  22. This is why I love State Farm. They do not have any breed discrimination for home owner's policies. They only care if the dog "has a record."

  24. Buddy is a Goberian or a Golden Retriever/Siberian Husky cross. So far we have been lucky with insurance, and the breed of our dog does not come into play. With a former insurer, many years, Golden Retrievers were at the top of the list. I wonder where they get their information!

    1. Really? I would have never guessed that! Wow! I have no idea where their resources come from or what the heck they are thinking!
