Do our pets have fears?

Happy Friday everyone! Wow this week went fast!
So many things going on, back to school, getting back on track of things etc . . .
How are your pets adjusting to the schedule change?
My huskies seem to be wondering around my daughters bedroom door quite a bit since she has been back in school.

Just a quick tip to help your pets with the transition of the kids being away :
- Spend a little extra time with them, as they may be feeling lonely.
- Maybe purchase a couple new toys.
- Puzzle toys are great to keep pets busy until the kids return from school.

Let's move on to today's post.

Do our pets have fears?

We know people have certain fears and even phobias, such a spiders, heights, and even clowns, but have you ever thought about what a dog (or cat) fear would be?

If you know how to read your pets body language, and be open minded to what they are saying to you, you will be able to figure out their fears.

Curious to know what my huskies fears are?

do dogs have fears?

Mika is scared of the dark.
Seems like a pretty normal fear . . .  for a human.
But dogs and cats can be scared of the dark too.

I realized Mika was scared of the dark right from the get go.
She would whine, and cry at night when everything was dark, and we couldn't figure out why.
We decided to leave some light on for her one night, and that night . . . no whining.
From that point on, Mika now has a night light, and she never whines at night now.

Not convinced?
Another reason I know she is scared of the dark, is because at night, when it's time for her bed time pee, our yard is pretty much pitch black. She refuses to go to her normal pee spot to use the bathroom at night. She will stay by the light source.

Lexus is scared of tall buildings.

do dogs have fears?

She will walk down any road, at any time of day, with no issues.
When I try and take her down the main road, she is fine until there are tall buildings.
I'm not sure where this fear came from, but she will do anything in her power to stay away from those buildings.

Lexus also has a fear of bridges.

Not just bridges, but bridges that have water running underneath them. I'm not sure if it is the sound of the water running beneath her feet, or the height, but she refuses to cross them. I have had to carry her over a bridge before, because we had to go that way.

Koda is scared of garbage bags!

do dogs have fears?

Yep. You heard that right.
My big strong stud muffin Koda, is terrified of garbage bags.
Not white garbage bags, just the black ones.
You know how you kind of have to shake the bag a couple times to open it up?
He will run as fast as he can to the other room, and peek around the corner.

He is also scared of lakes.

He has walked out into the river, but will not go near a lake. I have no idea why. He will even dip his feet in our little mini pool, but no lakes! He has seen his sisfur Mika jump in and have the time of her life swimming and splashing, but he steers clear of that direction.

As for my kitties . . . well, I have no idea what they fear. My guess would be nothing. They will take on any dog of any size, and they hunt the biggest baddest bugs around!

So, the Sibe Tribe is curious to know, what are your pets fears?
What do you do to address those fears?
And has ANYONE figured out a cats fear yet?

  1. Great post!

Zoe has a pretty severe noise phobia and we've tried everything on the market besides heavy sedatives to help her. 4th of July is a nightmare.
Phoenix is afraid of strangers reaching towards her.
Both of them are afraid of young kids.

    1. Thanks!
Have you tried the Thundershirt for the loud noises?
That's to bad about young kids. I think the only thing you could do with that is slowly but surely train her to be around them, but if you don't have young kids at home, that would be kind of hard.

  2. We too hate loud noises. Have a fabulous Friday.

    1. The Thundershirt may help with the noises. Have you tried that yet?
      Have a great Friday yourself!

  3. Interesting, I would have to think a while to figure out what my gang is fearful of. Have a great day.

    1. Thanks! Yep, all of our pets have fears, however some are much more subtle than others.

  4. Very interesting! We're afraid of the evil rug-sucking monster. We run whenever the mom takes it out of the closet.

  5. Awesome post! Audrey is scared of really loud noises too. Tried the Thundershirt but she refused to wear it because she hated the sound of the velcro. Sometimes we cannot win. Happy Friday! Sweet. Dog. Life.

    1. Oh i'm so sorry to hear that! Then I think the best thing you could do, is when there are loud noises, such as fireworks that you are able to prepare her for. Try sitting in a bedroom with her, and play some music or a t.v to try and distract as much as you can.

  6. Our brother, Bruin is afraid of sudden loud noises and he's also not a big fan of storms. We just keep him busy with toys to keep him busy!

  7. Teddy is scared of everything! Not kidding! He hides behind the kitchen table for most of the day, too scared to come out. Poor thing. I really don't know why he is like that. Ash is scared of thunderstorms and Scout is gun shy. He hates guns which is too bad, because he went to hunting school for 6 months and came back gun shy. Oh well!

  8. Other than the vet, I'm pretty fearless. Big strong watchdog Katie is scared of loud noises and lawn ornaments! Bailie is pretty fearless too.

  9. Poodles are not permitted to be afraid of anything. It's in the Poodle constitution,.

  10. You're right about animals having fears. My cats are all afraid of new people. Several of them hate loud noises, like thunder and even the sound of simple rain on the roof. It's different for each one of them.

    1. Yes, that's a big thing too. They are just like humans in that. Every pet has it's own fear(s) just like we do!

  11. Great post! Lottie's has a few fears too. She doesn't like hoods and hats but is fine if I am wearing them, it is just other people. She also isn't that keen on motorbikes. I think mainly because of the noise.

  12. That's funny! Three of my pups are scared of thunder, storms, fireworks, and shotgun blasts (there is a guy in the field behind my house who does skeet or dove shooting and it wigs the dogs out) Chloe is the only one not affected.

Willow, has recently discovered the oddity that is bronze statues... she wigs out and barks every time she seems them now. Along with men who move or work swiftly while wearying solid colored full body uniforms (HVAC guys are worst).

Hank is shy of everything and is afraid of sharp vocal tones.

Chloe while stalwart with thunder, storms, fireworks, and shotgun blasts, she is very shy of new things. What's pretty odd is it takes me (not my husband), to tell her it's okay and go say hi or to investigate. Once she has, she's golden. She also has a love/hate relationship with the vacuum, she hates the noise and suction, but LOVES that when I do vacuum because all her toys are rescued from under the couch and TV stand.

Putt-Putt is the oldest and isn't phased by much, but hates thunder, storms, fireworks, shotgun blasts, the vacuum, and steam mop (it hisses and sounds like an angry cat so he gives it a wide berth)

    1. The dreaded vacuum cleaner is a fear I think almost all animals have. Except the ones who like to chase them!
Thanks for coming by and sharing your pups fears with us :)

  13. The Lexus fear of bridges graphic is excellent. I know it isn't right to laugh at someones fears, but that face in the picture is perfect. As for our dogs, Veruca is scared of thunder and gun shots, I will make an assumption that the gun shot fear and the buck shot that was embedded in her leg when we adopted her might be related. Ava, doesn't seem to have many fears that we have seen yet. She is pretty confident, sometimes she steers clear of the cats, but mostly comfortable in her surroundings.

  15. What a great post, and it's so interesting the different things dogs can be afraid of! Our current dogs seem to be afraid of just the typical things....thunderstorms, fireworks, and the vacuum cleaner. One thing that has always stuck in my mind was our lab mix Maggie....she was afraid of going UNDER bridges, or through tunnels. When we had our boat and took it on the river, if we went under a bridge, she cowered down or went and hid somewhere. We never understood why.
I guess dogs' fears can be just as irrational as many humans' fears!

    1. Yes! Your exactly right! Every dog or cat has the typical noise fears etc....but it's the ones like you mentioned (going under a bridge) and with Lexus, going over a bridge. These fears are more like what a human fears, and I find that super interesting!

  16. As I've told you, Bentley is scared to death of fireworks and thunderstorms. We put him in his ThunderShirt and it is much better. Pierre isn't so much scared as he has trust issues of any kind of new change.

    1. Interesting Pierre. And i'm glad the Thundershirt works so well for Bentley! I have been recommending it to people who have fearful dogs when it comes to thunderstorms too.!

  17. Most cats fear the evil vacuum cleaner. I don’t. TW had a human friend who was scared to drive over bridges with water under them. MOL! Nicky was scared of rattling plastic bags. BTW, Savannah is trying to rehome a husky so if you know anyone, let her know. She featured him yesterday on her blog.

    1. The vacuum seems to be a number one fear in pets! I can't say that I blame them though! BOL! If I was that small and had some big loud machine sucking up everything in it's path, i'd be scared too!

  19. Isn't it interesting to see what other dogs fear? I think the bridge thing is about running water because it's a throw-back to sledding where Huskies had to sense if ice was too thin; running water under them is one indicator. Isis won't step on hollow ground at all, she goes around it. Isis fears thunder & fireworks, that's about it. Phoebe is fearless, but when we first got her she feared males; men & boys. We worked hard on that w/ her to overcome it. And yeah, cats basically fear next to nothing, little Diva's. LOL!
