Why should I feed pumpkin to my dog?

Pumpkin, pumpkin, pumpkin.
That's all we hear at this time of year, and how wonderful it is to feed to your dog.

But, is it really?

It is an old tradition that every year around Halloween, our children (and even us adults) enjoy some time carving pumpkins, making our own personal creations on them.
Now, it is becoming more and more popular that people are raving about feeding pumpkin to your pets.

To answer the question, yes pumpkin is very healthy for your dog, but why?

Let's start with the seeds.
Pumpkin seeds contain protein, carbohydrates and fiber. Roast them, grind them up, and feed to your dog!

The flesh of a pumpkin has vitamin A, which is great for their vision, and vitamin C, which boosts the immune system.
Another benefit of Vitamin C, is with dogs who have joint problems. Dogs who deal with this issue, need this particular vitamin more than their bodies are producing.

Pumpkin contains an antioxidant called Beta-Carotene.
The benefit of this is that it slows down the aging process of your dog!

The zinc that a pumpkin contains, will improve the skin and coat of your dog.
And there is no better way to do that, then all natural. Pumpkins can be a great source for this.

Pumpkin can help dogs who have diarrhea, as well as dogs who are constipated!

How can it do both?

The secret behind why a pumpkin helps stop diarrhea, is simple.
Pumpkin contains soluble fiber, which helps  slow digestion, and can help manage the diarrhea by absorbing water.

Pumpkin helps with constipation due to it's high fiber, and water content.

AND . . .

Pumpkin is also great for kitties too!

There you have it.
Feel free to feed pumpkin to your dog during the fall season, and feel good doing it!

  4. Great information, we use pumpkin a lot to tell people to use it for dogs with problem anal glands because of the fiber it firms up the stools so when pass out the rectum expressed the anal glands.

  5. I feed Cody pumpkin whenever he is on Prednisonol for his allergies. It keeps things "moving" When I didn't, we had to pay $500 to "unblock" him! Dakota has used it too, for constipation as well! We ALWAYS keep 100% canned pumpkin in the house, always!

  9. The fluffies won't eat pumpkin and they're on the fence about pumpkin flavored treats. I'm determined to come up with some sort of pumpkin concoction that they like! Although, I don't really like pumpkin myself. Guess we're just a pumpkin-free family ;)

  12. I love everything pumpkin, and the dogs do too! I'm glad it's so good for them, but didn't know it was good for cats too!
We've always had pumpkin occasionally, but just lately we've started giving it to Luke daily. He's always had trouble with his stools being very soft, and since we've started with the pumpkin, it looks like it's finally getting better!

    1. That is great to hear! I have recently began to feed it to Koda as well. He goes through periods of time where he has loose stools, and nobody can seem to figure out why. So I am hoping the pumpkin will help!

  13. Wow! Pawsome information on Pumpkins! I have to admit, I didn't know much about pumpkins until reading your post...All I knew was that they taste good in pies, and you can cook their seeds (YUMM!), and their fall-y. Thanks for sharing! Must have took a lot of research to find out all of that information.
I didn't know that you could feed pumpkins to your pets either! I might just try to feed my kitties some pumpkin!
