New legs lead to a new life for one husky.

Time for this weeks Monday smile!
I want to introduce you all to a husky named Derby. Although, you may have already heard of him because lately, his story is EVERYWHERE!!

Derby was born with tiny forearms and no paws on those arms.
Understandably, he had quite a hard time getting around, especially on hard surfaces.
Derby's owners could not care for him, and planned on surrendering him to a shelter, where he would be euthanized.
This is when Peace and Paws rescue stepped in.

A woman named Tara had heard about Derby, and eventually decided she was going to foster him.

Originally, Tara had bought a wheelchair for Derby, however, even though the wheels helped him get around easier, there were still so many limitations, and she wanted him to have more.

Tara works as the director of CJP Product Management at 3D systems, and with the help of some colleagues, they had come up with a plan for Derby.

After much design work, they had come up with something that had elbow cups to prevent Derby's elbows from getting sore while walking in his new legs.
To do this, they used a 3D printer.

Derby is now not only walking around, but running and playing his little heart out!!
He was adopted to his fur-ever home in August and is reportedly doing wonderful!
Eventually they plan on raising the prosthetic legs to make them taller for him.

If you would like to see the sheer joy on Derby's face, and just how well he gets around with his new legs, I encourage you to check out his video here :

Right?
I am so happy for him, and to me this story just SCREAMS, that just because something is difficult doesn't mean you should just disregard it, everything has hope.

See you tomorrow :)

  7. Oh, I was hoping you had seen this story! (I actually meant to send it to you but forgot). Did you know Peace & Paws is the same rescue we got Luke through? I had been following Derby's story on their Facebook page in the very beginning, back when they were looking for a wheelchair for him. Then I kind of lost track of it, but was so happy when I saw this video. It's such a cool thing, I couldn't believe how he could run! Honestly, I don't understand how this 3D printer stuff works, but it's definitely doing some good things.
