Pet Blogger Challenge 2015

We interrupt our regular scheduled blog post today, as we are taking part in the Pet Blogger Challenge. Today is normally our Siberian Saturday post, so if you came here for your fix on huskies, please stay tuned next week where I will pick up about the metabolism of the Siberian Husky.

Pet Blogger Challenge Jan. 10Hosted by Go Pet Friendly, this is a series of questions we are to answer, and really step back to see where we are at with out blogs, how far we have come, and what our goals are.

Here we go :

1. How long have you been blogging? And, for anyone stopping by for the first time, please give us a quick description of what your blog is about.

I have been blogging since November 2013.
When you come here, you will get a variety of things. I like to think of us as a one stop shop for anything dog related. I provide tons of great facts about Siberian Huskies, general tips and tricks for any breed, introduce great products we discover, as well as providing links to adoptable huskies and our very own handmade Pet themed jewelry.

2. Tell us one thing you accomplished on your blog during 2014 that made you proud.

This is a tough one. I accomplished SO much in 2014 as that was my first year blogging. I would have to go with opening my own jewelry shop here on the blog.

3. What lessons have you learned this year - from other blogs - or from your own experience - that could help us all with our own blogs?

One thing I learned quickly is that people love pictures. A blog post full of words just feels like to much work, not enough entertainment. People love to learn things from our blogs but they like to be entertained while their at it. It is human nature. Good photos or even funny photos related to your blog posts always makes it a much more interesting read.

4. What have you found to be the most successful way to bring traffic to your blog, other than by writing great content.

Sharing. I am on just about every social media network there is, and sharing sharing sharing is the way to go. Another big one is to visit other peoples blogs, and stay engaged in a conversation through your social media shares.

5. What was your most popular post this year? Did it surprise you that it was your most popular?

My most popular post of 2014 was "K9 Kelp - Time to vote"
I held a summer fun contest where people could win their own set of personalized coins.
It was a fun competition, and no I am not surprised it had the most views. People love contests, and love to vote for their fav dog photos.

6. What was your favorite blog post to write this year?

I really enjoyed my bloopers post. We all know how hard it is to take photos of our pets. Every one of us ends up having photos that are virtually unusable. But I turned my unusable photos into a bloopers post, and had a lot of fun going through all the photos I have.

7. Has your policy on product reviews and/or giveaway changed this year?
If you do reviews, what do you find works best, and what doesn't work at all?
If you don't do reviews, is this something you'd like to do more of?

I love to do product reviews. I do paid sponsored reviews as well as reviews in exchange for products. I know some bloggers will not do a review unless they get paid, but I honestly don't mind getting a product in exchange. I love to be able to discover new things to share with my readers.

With my reviews I find honesty is the best policy. Readers come to you for answers and info. If I don't like a product, I will not say that is a good thing to buy just for the purpose of not wanting to write a bad review. I also only review products I believe in, and treats that are healthy for my fur babies.

8. What is your best piece of advice for other bloggers?

Hmmm....this is a tough one too.
If there was one anything I could say, it is to keep engaging with your readers.
Answer your comments so your readers know what they say matters to you. If they have a blog, go check it out when someone comes to yours.

9. What goals do you have for your blog in 2015?

My goals are to keep expanding my traffic. I love seeing new faces here, and would love to continue to grow as I have been. Another goal is to get our jewelry n things shop's name out in the world. We haven't been around long so I would like to learn how to get our name out there.

10. If you could ask the pet blogging community for help with one challenge, what would it be?

There are actually 2 things I would ask. First, I would love any tips on managing time with all of the different social media networks plus blogging. Second, I would love to learn about promoting a business and how to get a name out in the internet world.

If your still reading this, that means you stuck with us through this very wordy blog post.
Thanks for that! I took this challenge last year as well, and it's a great way to really get the brain working and thinking about where we have come, and where we want to go with this blog.

See you Monday!

  5. I loved reading this - it's always so nice to take a deeper peak into the mind of one of your favorite bloggers. As far as managing your time on social media I'd look into Hootsuite, Buffer, Feedly, or IFTTT. I don't have first hand experience with those but I've read some great reviews on each.

I have a hootsuite account, but never really looked much into it. I suppose I should though BOL!

  11. I do know you can use Network blogs to coordinate your blog posts with FB. You can also set up tweets in tweetdeck. All of this to bring back traffic to your blog. I love Instagram. It is ALL about photography. That would be another way to bring traffic to your blog. Instagram is the largest growing social media site currently. Those would be my suggestions for any time management as most of that could be done all at once. We always love your cheerful upbeat blog posts.

  12. We always enjoy reading your posts. Mom having had a husky as a kid and several of her friends have them in Germany, so we love the breed. Our tip for social media is to do a bit here and there, but if you have a down time like in the evening when you watch TV or something, do some social media on your tablet while watching your show or during the commercials. We try to pop on and off several times during each day. We also have phases where we really concentrate on one social media for a few weeks and only do minimum on the others and rotate that around. It works pretty well for us.

    1. Thanks Emma, I love your blog as well!!
That is a good idea to do little bits during a commercial. I find I always use FB more than others, so that is where most of my time goes for social media.

  15. I really enjoyed your bloopers post too. I could totally relate to all the missed photos and bad pictures we have 100s of them. Like you, my goal this year will be all about promoting the business, we should keep in touch on that one. Have a great 2015!

  16. Thanks so much for joining in the Challenge, and congratulations on getting your first full year of blogging under your belt. It looks like you've done a ton in a short amount of time, and that's fantastic! I saw in another comment that you said you have a Hootsuite account - I'd recommend you start playing with that because it will allow you to schedule social media posts in advance, which saves a lot of time. Of course, you still need to check in and respond to comments, but just getting the posts all scheduled at once is a big help.

As far as promoting a business and getting the name out there, you really have two options. You can pay for it and use Google AdWords or Facebook ads ... or you can invest your time and spend time working your social media platforms. I chose the latter (because I had more time than money) and have been building my following for more than five years. It's a much slower process, but it was my only option. The good news is, it does eventually work. In the past couple of months I've gotten two sponsors and I anticipate that we'll get a couple more in 2015. If you ever want to bounce an idea off me, just send me a note - and good luck!

I do feel like I have completed so much in the year i've been blogging. I will definitely look more into hootsuite. I looked quickly at it, and sort of gave up before I really started. It all looked very confusing. But I will give it another go though. Thanks so much for your advice, I am like you and don't overly have the money to invest in ads etc..
I will definitely take you up on that offer if I have further questions for you, thanks !

  18. I'd love to give you tips about time management, but that's one of my biggest problems! I think I named that last year, so didn't mention it again this year, even though I don't think I improved in it over this year. Somehow I just keep plugging along...LOL.
I agree with you that engaging with your readers is important. You are really good about always answering your comments, and I think that's very important. I do that too, though sometimes it takes me a couple of days to catch up!

    1. It is important, I agree. I think it shows your readers that you value their comments, and actually care about what they are saying to you. I know that when I comment, I love to see when the writers answer me.
I look forward to reading your challenge!

  21. We just did the challenge, too and you are right--it IS hard work! But you did a great job. We enjoy reading your posts and seeing the photos of your beautiful dogs. Keep it up and we will be seeing more of you in 2015, I'm sure!

  22. Great post. And I loved seeing your bloopers post again. Talk about a brilliant way to get content from something many people just see as a lot pic.

But it did have me wondering what kind of crazy person thinks they could ever get three dogs at once to smile and look at the camera. :)

I'd second everyone's suggestion to use a social media management tool like Hootsuite. I like Hootsuite because I have two blogs and it keeps me from having to log in and out of Twitter for Hands on Home Buyer and Something Wagging.

What makes it easier to use is to download the hootsuite app to your browser. Then when you see something cool you want to share with your followers (including your own old posts), you just have to click the app on your browser bar. It can even choose the most likely time people will see your tweet, which is very helpful.

As for your jewelry business, maybe you should approach a blogger who does lots of review and giveaways. Since you're a fellow blogger and not a huge corporation, many people might be willing to do a review and giveaway and you could offer a discount to other people who order at the same time. Valentine's Day is coming up.

I'm no expert. But if you have a hootsuite question, feel free to email me through my blog. That said, if it feels complicated, maybe there's a better program that you'll like more. I gave up on Mail Chimp because it felt too complicated for me. I switched to Mad Mimi for sending out my blog posts because it was easy.

    1. Thanks so much for your wonderful advice!
I have done a couple different giveaways but never thought to add a discount, so thank you for that idea!!
I'll be looking into hootsuite again, I know I just gave up too soon.

  23. There's nothing wrong with a wordy post if you ask me! MOL Your blog has gone through a lot of changes over the last year and I think it is headed in a very good direction (not that I'm an authority or anything). I always appreciate your visits to my blog. Thank you very much for that. I know I'm horrible at getting around to everyone. It is one of my goals to improve that ! I think that promoting a business (especially a world-wide internet business) just takes a lot of time doing what you are already doing. If you sell your jewelry locally, you may want to consider getting your information on Yelp.com or Yellowpages.com. Ads in local newspapers would help you there too.

  25. What a great accomplishment - you've created all this in only one year?? You can feel really proud! Ugh, time management....that's a tough one. Social media is such a time-suck, and other than setting a timer or in some way limiting how much time you spend on your social media endeavors -- I haven't a clue. FWIW though, social media can pay off in the long run. It's a great way to promote your business!

  26. You've done very well in one year Miss Jenna. :-) If you ever figure out HootSuite maybe you could let me know, I'm still on Triberr but I loved what Pamela said.

Also maybe scheduling posts on Facebook (I don't know if you do that or not) but sitting down for a half an hour one night and scheduling a bunch of stuff might help free up some time.

  31. I'm definitely the one to talk to about managing time with blogging and social media, but in the past doing things in batches then scheduling them have worked best for me. I know there's a WP calendar plugin that helps to schedule blog posts (I'm not sure if there's an equivalent in Blogger). In the past I've also used BufferApp, Hootsuite, and Facebook scheduler to help better organize my posts/updates. Good luck with your blog in 2015!
