Poh The Dog Takes The Trip Of His Life For His Last Days

What would you do if your dog received a terminal diagnoses? Would you take him for a trip around the country perhaps? That's exactly what one dogs hu-dad did. This is the story of Poh. The mix breed dog who was adopted as a young pup from an animal shelter by New York man, Thoman Neil Rodriguez. You see, Poh is 15 years old. When Veterinarians told his paw-rents that he had inoperable Tumors in his abdomen, they knew they wanted to do something special for their dog to make the last bit of his life extra special.

On their trip, they traveled 12,000 some miles in about 7 weeks. Stopping here and there on the way, I am thinking they all had a blast! They stopped at famous land marks, went coast to coast, and definitely made their trip worth while.

The diagnosis Poh got from the Vet was that he had about 2 weeks of life left. HOWEVER, I am incredibly happy to say he is about 3 months past that date now, and is still going strong! And thanks to his paw-rents, is really living it up for the last part of his beautiful life.

This got me thinking. Do you have a bucket list for your dog?
I don't. But when I find stories like this, and see the happiness on the furry face of a senior dog, I really start wondering....what would I do? If I was in this situation, and knew there was a limited time left with my beloved huskies - what would I do? I really don't have the answer for that.

How about you?
Do you have a bucket list for your pets?
What would you do in this situation?

  1. Hey Jenna! We did a similar thing for our Big Guy before he passed away. We took him on two long roadtrips...out to South Dakota to visit family (whom he just adored!) and down south to visit the beach. He just loved going with us on the trips and did so well!

I think it is admirable what Poh's family is doing for him!!

  2. Luckily, my sisters and I have all been traveling our entire lives, so travel isn't the most important thing. It really just depends on our health. Katie is not doing all that well lately, but she is not up to doing much either, so such a trip would not be good for her. Mom tries to get us experiences all the time, so it isn't all bottled up at the end.

    1. I think that's great! A dog who experiences everything they can is a happy dog for sure!

  3. Oh, even though I go on lots of road trips and outdoor adventures already, I think my bucket list would be all about those two things. There are places I would love to go see!

  4. We don't have a formal list, but have done some favorite things for our dogs that we have lost. Sally we lost suddenly, but she had a pretty adventure filled life. With both Tino & Becca we planned special outings. We're doing it with Jack & Maggie too - they are both still healthy (knock on wood) but we know they are coming up on age 12.

    1. It's funny because I don't think about that kind of thing a lot, so when I find stories like these it really makes me wonder exactly what I would do.

  5. I would like to think that I could be that cool instead of curling up and crying. That is a great story.

  7. What a wonderful family Poh has!! We hope his life can be happy and painfree for as many days as he has. We had sort of a bucket list for Phantom. Mom told him he could have anything he wanted to eat as long as he would eat. He had more steaks, salmon, turkey, ice cream, and the like in the last year of his life. And lots and lots of petting and hugging. We do miss him so.

  9. What a great story, and what a cutie Poh is! I think we should always make the most of every day anyway. But you know I do have that bucket list for Sheba. She's been doing so well lately though, we don't feel any urgent need to do it all...we're just taking it slowly and planning on her being around for a long time!

  11. That is awesome! What a great story. Scout hasn't been doing too well lately and I am praying that we have time to do some special things with him...if he can do them. I hate it when they get old. It is so hard and so sad.

  13. A few days ago on my FB wall I put a video of Denali which shares from the Dog's POV his last day and his memories with his soul mate. It was long about 7 minutes but worth viewing. You might just be able to pull it up on google. It is worth viewing, very moving.
