What's The Difference Between An Alaskan Husky And A Siberian Husky

Ever wonder what the difference between an Alaskan Husky and a Siberian Husky is? Every Saturday we like to focus on info related to the majestic Siberian, however today, I am going to include a little bit about the Alaskan Husky.

So what exactly is the difference between the
Alaskan Husky and a Siberian Husky?

There are many actually. For instance, did you know that an Alaskan Husky is not actually a recognized breed in the CKC or the AKC? Yep it's true. The Alaskan Husky is actually bred to be the optimal racing/working dog. A unique mix of different Nordic breeds make the Alaskan Husky have a speed and endurance to them, like no other. While the Siberian Husky was bred for work and sled purposes as well, their appearance also has a lot to do with how they are bred, and are often seen in dog shows as well as racing. whereas the Alaskan is simply built for speed.

Mika - My Siberian Husky

I think everyone knows that a Siberian Husky is a well known racing dog. They can run very fast, very long and can endure cold harsh weather. However Sibe's are best used for short distance racing. The Alaskan has been known to race faster, and for longer periods of time. Interestingly enough though, the temperament with Alaskan Husky VS Siberian Husky is very close to the same. Both are affectionate, loving and incredibly playful.

Conclusion?
Both are amazing dogs, both are gorgeous, and can make fabulous additions to any family, providing you do your research, and understand the needs of each breed, Feel free to take a look at my "Are Huskies For You?" page for more info.

  3. I have never heard of the Alaskan Husky. The United Kennel Club recognizes the Alaskan Klee Kai. Is this the same? Interesting history on that breed but sounds like it is still very rare. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Hi there. The Klee Kai is actually a miniature husky. The Alaskan Klee Kai is a miniature Alaskan Husky basically. Not the same but along those lines however. Alaskan Huskies are actually not rare at all, I think it is more that people are unaware of them. If you watch races such as the Iditarod, you will notice that a lot of the dogs racing are not pure Siberian Huskies, but Alaskan Husky or Siberian Mixes. Bred for speed and perfect for races such as these :)

  7. I did not know the difference....very interesting. Both breeds are definitely beautiful. So do you think more Alaskan huskies are used for races like the Iditarod, since they can go longer distances?

    1. Yes, often times in races like that you will see more Alaskan huskies rather than Siberians, however I of course am always cheering for the sibes!!!

  10. So interesting! I though I knew just about everything there is to know about Huskies, but I always thought that Alaskan Husky was just another name for a Sibe! Thanks for providing that clarification!

  11. There is a kind of Husky in AK which no longer exists in Europe. A breeder friend of mine in Germany flew one or two over to her place to try and get that breed going again. So many differences in the basic breed.
