4 Reasons Why I Feed My Dogs Raw Meaty Bones

4 Reasons Why I Feed My Dogs Raw Meaty Bones
To feed, or not to feed, that seems to be the hot topic as of late, when it comes to giving dogs raw bones. For myself, I was undecided on the subject for quite some time, but once I decided to start feeding raw meaty bones to the dogs, I never looked back. Some of you may be familiar with this, but for those who are not, I would like to share a few reasons why I love raw bones.

4 reasons why I feed my dogs raw meaty bones:

  1. They help keep my dogs teeth clean
  2. They keep my dogs busy
  3. Prevents destructive behavior
  4. Bones are super healthy for my dogs
A few of the reasons I listed here may sound familiar to you. That's because a lot of the same bonuses come from Bully Sticks, which I recently highlighted here.

Since raw bones take so long for a dog to gnaw through, the constant chewing helps fight tartar and plaque, not to mention aiding in the prevention of gum disease. Plus, as you can see in the photo on the right, the Huskies are in complete tunnel vision with these bones. it keeps them busy for quite some time. Chewing bones not only provides mental stimulation, but they are great exercise for the jaw muscles.

raw bones
Before you decide to feed raw bones to your dogs, there are some things to keep in mind. Such as the fact that it can get incredibly messy! I always restrict my dogs to the kitchen area only, when they are gnawing on their bones. It is literally a bloody mess, and lots of good floor cleaning is definitely a necessity afterwards.

The end result? One (or three) very happy dogs! I snapped this pic of Mika (right) as soon as she was done with her bone. Tongue hanging out, smiling, and satisfied! She knows raw bones are a rare treat, so when she gets her paws on one, you can see the happiness in her face. I always make sure to provide plenty of fresh water when feeding any type of treat, especially raw bones. After all, so much chewing and gnawing makes for one thirsty pup!

If you think raw bones might be the next thing on your grocery list, I always recommend talking to your vet beforehand. It is important to know your dog, and know what's best for your dog. Maybe your dog has a super sensitive stomach? Maybe your dog prefers to 'chomp' rather than 'gnaw' on things? Those factors would be a sign that bones may not be a good choice for you and your dog. There are many benefits to raw bones, but with that being said, they aren't for everybody, or every-pup I should say. Consider your options, speak to your vet, and determine whether or not raw bones can be the next yummy treat for your dog.

Today is also our Flashback Friday blog hop. I came across a photo of my kitty, Winter. He is slightly obsessed with curling up in baskets, boxes, etc... as are most of the cats I know! I snapped this one a couple years back, and I have about 100 others just like this one!

  1. We have never had one that was so raw, but it sure looks tasty! For us they would be outdoor only bones, but we enjoy gnawing on bones in the yard.

    1. I thought about feeding them outdoors, but with the baby gate closing the kitchen off from the living room and the rest of the house, it worked well. Just a lot of floor cleaning afterwards! LOL!

  2. LOVE raw meaty bones! I have a special (old) beach towel that I am allowed to eat my bones on, as it can easily be dumped in the washer for a good cleaning afterwards.

    1. That's a great idea! My huskies never lay still when they chew bones, so I don't think a towel would work for us LOL! They like to chew, then pick it up and move to a different spot, then continue chewing haha!

  3. We love raw bones here! Definitely keep us occupied for a LONG time, play bows,

  6. Mine have never had raw bones... we agree there is a lot of debate on raw food.

    1. Definitely a lot of debate, and while I don't feed raw, I have been doing a ton of research on it!

  7. Kilo's never had a raw bone, but I'm sure he'd love it. I would say it's an outside thing followed by a really good bath for him though!

    1. LOL, yea, a lot of people feed them outside, but the kitchen works well for us. I'm sure Kilo would love a raw bone!

  9. They sure are enjoying those raw bones! Both my dogs would love it. I've often worried that they might be unsafe the way many raw hide bones can be - fear of splintering and damaging their insides. Do you know if raw bones splinter the way many rawhide bones do, or are they more "consumable"? I love the photo of all 3 dogs in heaven w/ their raw bones!

    1. Cathy, i'm sure they would love them too! Raw bones are very very different from raw hides. Raw hides are so unsafe, for numerous reasons.

Cooked bones will splinter, but raw bones are much safer, and yes, much more consumable. I always supervise the entire time they are eating their bones, and I have nothing but great experiences with them.

  11. Sounds like raw bones are a great, healthy treat for your dogs. Not sure I could handle the bloody mess. Plus, N.A.S.H.A. takes all things good to the couch. Ha! Thanks for sharing the info.

    1. LOL! That is exactly why, when my huskies have their raw bones, they get locked in the kitchen area! LOL!!!

  12. We love raw meaty bones too, but it is hard to find big ones around here. If they are too small, we might choke on them. But once in a while we get lucky and Mom finds some for us. They really ARE great for the teeth.

    1. Yep, you're absolutely right. They definitely have to be the right size, or it is possible to choke.
I don't give them all the time here. Just a once and a while treat. :)

  13. I give my dogs raw meaty bones (technically, RMBs are the edible ones :)) a few times a week, but only in their crates! Much easier to bleach out for my clean freak tendencies.

    1. LOL! Nice. :)
I give them once every two weeks or so. The kitchen works well for me, because I have it closed off from the rest of the house with baby gates. I scrub the floor when their done, and voila!

  16. I definitely like the general idea of feeding raw bones, but ever since Buzz fractured one of his upper molars on a beef bone (granted, not raw, but smoked), my bone enthusiasm has died. I may try a small, raw bone in a little while!

    1. Aw that's too bad. I have heard it happen more than one time. I am very careful about which bones I choose to give. Raw only, that's for sure!

  18. We don't feed her raw, not sure my parents would appreciate meat blood all over the floor!

    1. LOL! Not many people do, but when they are contained to one small area, I don't mind cleaning up after them :)

  19. I wish I could give my dogs the big bones, but they always try to eat them, as opposed to just chewing the meat off!

    1. Yea, there are definitely some dogs out there who are chompers rather than chewers.

  20. When Mum has them in the freezer, I will get a raw marrow bone when she goes out and does not take me with her -- which is most days she goes out cos it is waaaaay to hot for my poor paws (108 today!). She has not been to the store that carries them this week -- hopefully if there are no thunderstorms tomorrow, we will go and get some marrowbones -- I really luvs them!!

    1. Nommers!!!!!! Just be super careful when moms not home. If you choke when no one is there to help you, it could be bad news for you sweet pup.

  21. We used to give these to our first dogs, but I must have heard something bad along the way and stopped. The only reason I don't now is because Luke and Cricket sometimes fight over long lasting treats, or they steal Sheba's, who would let them.

    1. Aw thieving pups huh? LOL! A good way to solve that, is when you do give out treats, or bones, or anything like that, it to feed them separately, or in separate rooms. It really helps! :)

  22. I feed my dogs raw bones on occasion but in the hot summer not so much as they take them outside and they get bad and stink.

  24. I get these occasionally for Haley and she LOVES them! I have an old beach towels that she lays on to chew the bone, then I just throw it in the washer. The nice thing is, after that first session of chewing, the bone is usually pretty clean from any raw meat. The picture of all three dogs in the kitchen is great!
