My Siberian Husky Fishing Partner #DogsInBoats

My Siberian Husky Fishing Partner #DogsInBoats
I was prepared to write a post today, with some tips on helping your dogs get used to boat trips, and feel more comfortable out on the water. We took Koda out for his very first boat trip, and I thought he was going to be nervous, so I planned on taking you all on a learning journey with me, as I eased Koda into being a boating dog. The only problem was... Koda was a complete natural! I mean, he loved it! We purchased his very own life vest, and were prepared for him to be a bit scared going out on the water. I was so proud of my boy to see how excited he was to get out in the boat with us!

It was kind of funny at first, because I had Koda outside the truck when "the man of the house" was backing up into the water with the trailer. The funny part was, Koda was very worried about his daddy when he saw the truck backing into the water!!! He began to whine, and felt anxious. But once we had the boat tied to the dock. He was thrilled to jump onto it with me.

When the boat took off, is when I was worried he would be scared, or anxious. We took off slowly at first so that he would feel more comfortable. When we started moving, his body tensed up a bit, but he still had a smile on his furry face, and he was doing just fine. We were able to speed up gradually, and he did great! He loved having the breeze blowing in his fur.

We went up to sit in the front of the boat, and he was happy to lay on the bench (bow rider) seats, and watch the water go by. Then it was time to anchor, and go fishing! My first thought was that he may get bored, and start to whine. Nope, not Koda! He was so interested in watching the water, and watching us all casting our lines into the water, that nothing was going to bother him!

Every time one of us got excited when a fish bit our line, he got excited too, and ran to whoever was reeling it in! In this photo (above) was my oldest daughter. She had a fish on her line, and he sat right by her side until she reeled it in. What happened next?

He was licking his lips in anticipation as he saw the bass get pulled into the boat. But at this moment, he made me more proud than ever! He did not bite at the fish, he did not jump at it, paw at it, or anything. He just licked his lips, as we promised him his own meal of boiled bass when we we got home.

All in all, we had a great day, and Koda is now our official fishin' pal! Next it will be Mika and Lexus's turn, and we will see how they like fishing, and boat rides!

The Sibe Tribe would love to know:
Have you taken your pets in a boat? How did they do for their first time?

**Side note - Just wanted to let you guys know, there was a problem with my guest post at 4Knines.com. It went up a little late, but it is posted now, and if you have a chance I would love for you guys to check it out! >>  "How to prepare your dog for the new baby."  << Thanks so much in advance!

  1. That's awesome Koda! All of our Shelties were boat dogs and since we practically lived on the lake growing up, they were very used to riding in boats. Many years ago, I took Shiner on the boat and she was nervous. But, I think this was because I was riding behind the boat in a tube with my daughter. When we went this past Summer, she did excellent on the boat and just laid there. But she was worn out too.

  3. Bailie hasn't been on a boat, but Katie and I have and we loved it. Feeling the wind in our furs and the pawsome smells is always wonderful. No fishing here, but I suspect we would love to see that too. Koda looks great in his life jacket!

  7. I would rather be on the lake fishing than anywhere else. We sold our boat before Bentley was born so he hasn't experienced the thrill.

  10. I'm so glad Koda, and all of you, had such a good time! I don't really remember Kobi and Maggie being nervous about the boat the first time, but it was so long ago I can't swear to that. I know for sure that they always loved it though! I really miss it.

  12. Ahoy, mateys! Oh, looks like fun times! Koda looks like he was a very happy Husky! Our Harley used to go boating with us...she had her life jacket and all...she was a bit skittish of the waves and noise and didn't seem to like how it felt under her paws, but then acted all cool like she was born to go boating once we docked! We sold our boat a few years back, but I think she's happy to be a landlubber Husky! Hope the next outing brings fun and joy to your other two pups!
