5 Reasons I Feed My Dogs Pumpkin

benefits of feeding pumpkin to dogs

Now that Autumn has arrived, pumpkin is on the brain! Pumpkin pie, carving pumpkins, pumpkin decorations, pumpkin, pumpkin, PUMPKIN! Which isn't a bad thing, but did you know that your dog can benefit greatly from pumpkin? It doesn't just make a great pie, it is something of a super food as well!

Benefits of feeding pumpkin to dogs:

  1. Fiber. Pumpkin is a great source of fiber, and helps keep your dogs digestive system moving. The fiber will not only help a dog who is constipated, but it will also help a dog who is having issues with loose stools.
  2. Antioxidants and fatty acids in pumpkin seeds are great for your dogs coat, and skin
  3. If your dog has a sensitive tummy, try feeding two tablespoons of 100% pure canned pumpkin daily.
  4. Canned pumpkin is loaded with beta carotene, magnesium, iron, potassium, zinc and vitamins A and C - helping prevent cancers in pets.
  5. Does your dog need to shed a few pounds? Try reducing 2 tablespoons of your dogs regular food, and adding 2 tablespoons of canned pumpkin to their diet!

For you kitties out there - Canned pumpkin can greatly reduce those awful fur balls! Don't like the taste? Add a small amount of pumpkin to your wet food!

What are you waiting for? Embrace the Fall season and get out there and eat some PUMPKIN!

  2. We all love pumpkin around here, but I didn't know you could give it to cats too! With Sam's long fur, she does get some hairballs, so we might have to try it with her (if she'll eat it...LOL)!

  13. Excellent idea! I add canned pumpkin to my dog Phoebe's food to help add fiber to her diet. She has a hard time w/ bowel movements and the added fiber helps a lot. I have a hard time finding actual canned pumpkin vs. canned pumpkin filling used for pies which contains sugar and salt. I've used both but I try to find the pure pumpkin in a can. Now that it's Fall I hope to get a few whole pumpkins and cook up the flesh for her. Both my dogs LOVE the taste of pumpkin!
