Do We Humanize Our Pets Too Much? #FurBabyLove

Do We Humanize Our Pets Too Much? #FurBabyLove

Humanizing pets seems to be quite the touchy subject nowadays. But what does it even mean?
To put it simply, people say we humanize our pets when we call them our fur - babies. People say we humanize our pets when we let them sleep on our beds, or lay on our furniture. People say we humanize pets when we take them on vacations with us, or treat them as our children. And what do I have to say about all these "people?" SO WHAT? Who cares if we call our pets fur babies, who cares if we treat them as our furry children, who....cares!?!

Did you know, according to Wikipedia, 35% of Canadian households own dogs, and 38% Canadians own cats? Yup, that's a lot of pets! About 7.9 million cats, and 5.9 million dogs! WOW!

Do We Humanize Our Pets Too Much? #FurBabyLove

My pets are my fur babies, and I am proud of it!
WHO'S WITH ME??

I would love to hear your thoughts on the subject.
Do you think we humanize our pets too much?

  1. My pets are my babies, too and I use the #prouddogmom on every photo on instagram. :D They are members of the family and the reason I get out of bed every day.

  2. We are Mom's fur babies, her family. We see nothing wrong with it. Some folks may take it a bit to the extreme, but for most, we think it is great. Why not?

  3. Well, I am obviously Ma & Daddydog's fur baby; we are a small, happy family. Yes, I travel with them (sometimes) and I get to sometimes sleep on the big bed, but who cares? It's their choice to let me do these things and no one elses. We don't mind if some people prefer not to be called pet parents...that is their choice. But no one should impose their views on someone else.

  4. I don't see a thing wrong with it, if that's what we choose to do. I can never understand why anyone else would have a problem with it...it doesn't affect them, right? I might think it's silly for someone to put a frilly dress on their dog, but if someone enjoys that, why not? I'd sure rather see our pets being humanized than being left outdoors and neglected because someone thinks "it's just a dog".

  5. Agreed. It's not hurting anyone, and I certainly don't think it's unhealthy behavior.

  6. We probably shouldn't try to make them human. They are so much better than that! BOL!

  7. I know I am momma's baby, and that is all right with her. She sees dogs as more than "just a dog". Hugs.

  8. My human children grew up and moved out on their own. My pets are now my children and if someone criticizes me they are out of my life.

  9. I do think we humanize pets too much, but not in the way people would assume. I think the pet industry is pushing us to humanize pets and then manipulating our affection to earn money on inferior products. Yep, that was me quickly jumping on a high horse, but I'll get down now.

I do think there is that rare person who makes me uncomfortable when they get mad at me for asking what their dog's name is and they tell me that the dog is their daughter and not a dog - true story. But how many people behave that way towards their pets? Like 1 in a million? It's rare and, to be honest, I don't care, because that dog is well taken care of so I apologize and say "what's your daughter's name?"

Usually articles warning us about humanizing our pets (oops, about to get on a high horse again) are talking about people like me and you. We call our selves "dog moms" and our dogs "fur kids" and it pisses a group of people off who believe dogs are property to be bought and sold. I avoid those people.

I'd prefer to hang out with my fur babies and my fellow dog moms anyway.

  10. We think pets should be humanize! After all, we're living beings and we deserve to be treated with dignity.

  12. I don't have human children so my "boys" are my "kids" and I don't care what anyone thinks about that! xoxo DakotasDen

  15. I think the place that humanizing dogs has hurt them the most is with many modern dog training practices. I do not think on the whole dogs are better behaved or socialized today compared to when I was a kid and dogs were trained as dogs and not treated as furry kids.

  16. I definitely think of my dogs as my fur-babies. If other people don't like it, they can kiss my dog's pampered furry butt! People who pro-actively criticize others for thinking of their pets as bur-babies should mind their own business & focus on criticizing something far more important like animal cruelty.
